What is the best city you have ever visited?

Postby MG » Tue Nov 05, 2002 10:10 am

What is the best city you have ever visited? Not necessarily architecturally, though if that's your criteria, that's fine.

Now, no dissing of Dublin in this thread, try and keep this positive rather than bitching about Dublin as in other threads.

can any city compare with NYC? its in a category of its own.
sure, other cities have x, y, and z -but New York has the whole spectrum of humanity.
you just feel that anything can happen at any moment- incredible place.

Lisbon for me… architecture the old city itself, the Alfama district and all the new architecture / public space down on the old docklands, lovely metro and old trams, food wine lovely weather, football, people and prices.

A little tip !! The best kept secret for favourite old town would have to be Castellammare de Golfo 40 kms west of Palermo Sicily……God its November how I wish I was back.

Beat this: Belem, at the mouth of the Amazon, right on the equator. Colonial architecture, huge old dockside buildings converted into an amazing range of restaurants, botanical and zoological gardens, amazing archeological sites nearby, an interestingly louche atmosphere, and that Brazilian verve. Forget Manaus upriver, it's been wrecked. All the tourists go to Rio - so Belem is pretty much unspoiled.

Belem is a place to retreat to in a Graham Greene kind of way. Or a Le Carre, Tailor-of-Panama kind of way, if you prefer.

Lisbon is a great city specially at sunset. (it is my home town)

The sunlight and the colors are very beautifull

The Saint Jorge's Castle is a great place to look at the city

I just arrived from Mumbai. A caotic city but very peculiar

For modern creative architecture, low and high rise and overall a very pleasent forward looking city, Valencia, Spain. most people think of Madrid or Barcelona, but this is a city that holds a lot of suprises.

Agreed about Valencia. The old market buildings there are awesome. Plus recent Calatrava and Foster, and that amazing linear park made out of the old river bed, running right through the middle.

Montevideo is a magic place for me. Arriving by boat from BA. Walking up through the markets and squares. Wonderful. Salavador Bahia was a amazing place 15 yrs ago .... I hear its no longer so great.

ooh, what an interesting little thread...so far i've only been around europe (but almost all of it)

1. barcelona - for all aspects of living
2. london - for its variety
3. munich for its cathedral spires and the city is beautiful esp. with a bit of snow
4. vienna - for its richness of architecture
5. paris - same as above

sydeny, san francisco, helsinki, genoa, edinburgh. all pure class to visit, and all with a direct relationship to the sea which is no coincidence.

Couldn't disagree more. NYC is great but lacks too much for me to choose it. Hong Kong, Bangkok, Rome and Paris all great cities, but for me the answer is always going to be London. London has everything, from the glitzy West End to seedy SoHo, China Towns to Little Indias, Modern Skyscrapers to Royal Historic Palaces, Oliver Twist to Harry Potter, Harrods to Notting Hill, Tube trains to Rickshaws and everything in between. Absolutely magical place, simply unique.

For variety in everything, architecture, Culture, nightlife, it's gotta be London.
Although I'm biased, since I'm studying there.
