If Tate Modern, the contemporary art museum opened in 2000, is a bilaterally-split classical composition, then the design for Tate Modern 2 by the same architects, Herzog and de Meuron, erupts into joyous asymmetrical gothic. Freed from the formal geometry of Giles Gilbert Scott's mid 20th century power station with its central tower, the Swiss architects - 11 years on from their original commission and now a great deal more internationally famous - have decided to have fun.

Thanks for posting that Paul. It will certainly change that entire area. It is amazing to walk to the south of the Tate Modern at present, as it is like going into another world compared to the Thames side. I wonder what the planners in Southwark will think of i?. They have been trying to make a mark in recent years through architectural innovation. Some examples of this are the converstion of Tate Modern itself, The Will Alsop designed Palestra office building on Blackfriars road, Peckham Library, Allies & Morrison's Bankside 123 and their own offices across the road at 85 Southwark Street. I just wonder if anything that is seen to detract from the view of the Tate Chimney will be looked upon unfavourably by the planners now that it has established itself as such an icon for this part of London?

that building is monstrosity. H&deM have really gone to the dogs over the past 5 years. such a shame they've spread themselves far too thin if you ask me. but at least we have their early buildings.

It appears to abandon all the principles of their earlier work as embodied in the original Tate Modern. Rather than being a considered and rational response its another 'look at me!!!!!' icon that could be anywhere. Poor show.

Well done to H&dM for getting into icons just when everyone else was getting out of them.
