RIBA challenges architects to build ‘royal’ sandcastles
The RIBA Northern Region has invited architects and fellow construction industry professionals to take part in a huge sandcastle competition involving teams of schoolchildren from the North East.
The Sandcastle Challenge – an annual fundraising event at Druridge Bay where local architects are matched to teams of schoolchildren in order to design and build sandcastles – last year involved more than 500 children and 30 architects.
The competition this year – sponsored by Muraspec, USG (UK) and James Burrell Builders Merchants – will be based on the theme ‘A castle fit for a Queen’ to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee year.
There are four prizes of £100 for the winning schools and a further £100 for the school raising the most sponsorship money, while the winning architect has the honour of taking home the prestigious RIBA/Muraspec Trophy. Last year the event, which includes the Sandcastle Ball held a week later, succeeded in raising more than £7,500 for children in the North East.
The trophy will be presented at the Sandcastle Summer Ball on 19 July at the Marriott Metro Centre.
