ARCHITECTS in Beijing have been told to make all new buildings grey. Fu Bonon, the city planner, said grey was "agreeable with the climate, cultural background and tradition here".

most large buildings for foreign companies are designed by their own architects. No-one uses local architects. The new buildings in Beijing will have the same damn pastel tiles they have everywhere else in China.
