start with vitruvius and keep reading. theres no definite "new" approach to architectural design. constantly morphing ideas and ideals mean fluidity is becoming more prevalent in the fashion of design. dont read a book and take it as gospel for anything. look at everything thats being designed and draw your own conclusions.
As a starting point i'd recommend the work of neil leach

well i would recommend alot of Neil Spiller s work UCL lecturer, deals in nanotechnology etc and loves Salvador Dali.....trust me
also alot of mind bogling books...from philosophers ie Leibniz, Guattari....if you read them, re read them try and incorporate what you have read into something more idealistic or real...alot of architecture is theory and concepts are the basis of design

Sigfried Giedion, A little bit more historically orientated for what you might be looking for, but none the less well worth looking at. Also might be worth looking at Henri Lefebvre. Neil Leech, as pointed out by SW101, is a good starting point to get into other theorists.
