debased with a poodle

Does anyone else find it somewhat amusing that this thread has now become one of the most confusing threads due to posts being edited to nothing etc etc? :)

Thanks

I unlike you, took the comment of the bar at face value. Nothing in this Country surprises me anymore least of all the tone of this conversation.

Yes that can be quite frustrating, but the differentiation needs to made 'wordprossessing editing' which is a good thing I feel. As opposed to 'deleting' editing on which your point is well made.

Yes Diaspora, I agree with you. That was what I meant. Apologies for not making it clearer. :)

Its nice to be able to exchange comments and point of interests as a slight aside to the drudgery of everyday work. Theres only so many specifications i can write and so many hours photoshopping i can slave away at before i need to see something of interest. someone highlighting an interesting building or asking a question, perhaps venturing a point of view for discussion......

your posts are extremely long, laborious and disjointed, making them difficult to read, unrewarding for those who reach the end, and nigh on impossible to reply to with out a hot head or tongue stuck firmly in cheek. your habit of nulling everything you write 5 minutes later is quite annoying too. if its good enough to post, leave it there. just dont leave all 5,000 words of it there. thats an essay, not a post as i see it.

why you and diaspora are getting up on your "everyone hates me" horse i dont know. people are just trying to lighten the tone and kindly point out that in recent times there have been many many many random thoughts expressed incoherently on this forum. its gets trying.

Talking about the forum in general. Don't you just love it that when it finally does get entertaining. All these new posters pop out of the woodwork.

oh really? well this was a direct reply to my comments. care to elaborate?

Easy to see why you did Architecture and not English although if there was a degree in hate studies you'd just have to turn up for the exam, you'd get a 1.1[/B]

The problem with this forum is that the posts are squashed at the side of the screen. And what would have been one line in a normal forum, appears as 2.5 lines here - so posts appear 2.5 times longer, and this makes people bored and they try to skip lines when reading (at least that's what I do).

I'm glad other people have noticed that garethace talks nonsense sometimes. But to me, very detailed architecture discussions with strange terminology also sounds like nonsense, and Diaspora is also guilty of philosophizing in each post.

I thought James Joyce was crazy, and he became famous in an "Emperor's New Clothes" sort of way. But now I realized that this style of writing is comprehensible by some people - and it is an art.

So.. here's what I remember from the few pages I read of Ulysses - it sounds like something garethace would appreciate:

"Something something Sinbad the Sailor, Tinbad the Tailor, Rinbad the Railer, Minbad the Mailer, Ninbad the Nailer, etc."

Don't really have any problem with the forum myself Bulldozer, in fact I think it is structured perfectly for debate. As a consequence is becoming very popular.

If I have a worry it's that you don't know who people really are. Iv'e no idea if Diaspora is male or female for example. I mean I think he's a bloke but I could be standing beside "him" at a bus stop in Dublin and be COMPLETELY unaware.

I mean, I might be almost certain that the goofy guy with the pudding bowl haircut, Kylie T shirt and dog eared copy of The Return of the King tucked under his arm is Diaspora but I would really never know. It's a bit disconcerting, I find ;)

It's called Hiberno-English and like all dialects it can be a little difficult to pick up. But it must surely be better than this one world junk that doing the rounds courtesy of 'Freinds' etc

Alan I am a 30 something male, the last dodgy haircut I had cost $0.80c and was a blade 3 all-over. As for Kylie never liked her The Reynolds girls were my Pete Waterman favourites. :D

SW101 Don't worry my shrink nearly has them under control, he said I just need to avoid a certain type of individual and I'll be OK.

I think if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck you can be pretty sure of what you have.

Yes - architectural criticism can, on occasion, be impenetrable. This is most emphatically *not* a good thing, yet it seems to be picked up on by a certain kind of mind, which then blithely assumes anything of similiar impenetrability must be of value. Sadly this is rarely the case, as has been amply demonstrated lately.

Golden rule: If it's hard to read, nine times out of ten it's not worth reading.

If the purpose of writing here is debate then comprehension is key. Otherwise it's just persiflage masquerading as insight.

I never got over her 'I should be so lucky' Phase in the late 80's.

I know she spent a few years in Belgium during the mid 90's with a dance label. Her stuff since her comeback has been more tolerable but.. How much of what you see is real

Message board formats.

This is where I started off as an online message board contributor:

http://www.aceshardware.com/forum

It is a pretty radical approach to a message board design, and serves that online community of computer specialists surprisingly well indeed. Notice how you can cut in anywhere in the thread. Meaning you can have a number of parallel discussions on the same thread. The only way you know what is a new post, is by the red 'new' sign at the start of a new post.

Any threads you have looked at turn from blue to purple in the main message board list. The messages just move off the screen as each day goes by. You have to keep the links yourself somewhere, like in an email or somewhere, if you wish to re-visit an older thread from a month ago say.

This means the message board constantly gets flushed periodically rather like a toilet. Allowing discussion about new computer products, new articles, topics etc to take precedence all the time. I mean, I could keep adding some stupid comment to a thread of my own making every day for months to keep it at the top of this message board.

While this feature can be an advantage for some old threads like 'The spike' where some new piece of information breaks about it. I can see how it would 'piss off' regular posters a bit too, with guys like myself camping on the discussions I just wish to stay active.

This thread has started to make me think about this forum as a sort of 'online public space'. It is of course an exclusionary space in many respects (it is limited to people who have internet access and a small amount of internet knowledge along with other factors). However it still interests me as a sort of 'space'. I wonder if we were all meeting up in a real public space what the outcome would be? I am willing to guess that who ever was controlling it would have had to install CCTV cameras by now! Anyone else any thoughts on this? :p

Thanks

If you want to give yourself a real foundation in these concepts though, look up a book by Susan Conway called 'Unlocking your Knowledge Assets' published by MicroSoft Press.

debate can be a polite form of fist fight and at worst a confusing exercise in i know bigger words than you! however persiflage is a gem and wit and a piss take are just that so keep your socks on gareth ace!
i didnt mean to sound snotty in my last post and i chose not to have my e-mail given out as it is an option. i dont think its relevant to the thread and privacy is a good thing plus if someone wants to e-mail me then that is what the moderator is for. bollocks enough about that - kylie is a cracker all 4 ft of her and with that...:D

What're you talking about - all of you? Your English is abnormal.

It is easy to arrange a meeting for everyone. How about Friday, February 27th, 12 noon - at the entrance of the St Stephen's Green shopping mall. If you are a member here, go and stand there at that time and look at the people standing around you and see if they catch your eye ;)

I don't like Kylie Minogue - she's very small and thin and behaves in a silly way for a person her age - it's pathetic. Her 80's music isn't so bad though :)

Failing that, you can accost random people and ask them if they're from the internet.
