Roads versus Rail

Found this on the Platform11 site. Quite interesting reading.

For the longest time, I thought the motorway network the NRA was planning made sense and was badly needed, but I am not sure now. We only have 4 million people living on this island and a lot of railways lines lying idle. The chart compares rail service of Sligo and Penzanze - towns of the same population is simply mind blowing. Why are we not making better use of of railways?

Why did the firstone tire and rubber company buy the San Francisco tram company in the 1920's?

Look at the economics of Ireland, income tax only covers the health service, it is house of cards and if car sales were to dry up the government wouldn't have any money to build equestrian centres of the wrong specification.

Like it or loathe it the car is here to stay and Bull Island were not too far wrong in extolling the vitues of a decent size cardbox on Butt Bridge.
