Bank of Ireland closing 34 College Green Branch

I wonder what will happen it now... probably turned into huge cattlemarket pub, ruining College Green.....

"As you may be aware, we have been engaged for some time in the rationalisation of overlapping branches, particularly in urban areas. No's 34 and 2 College Green are among our largest branches and are located within a very short distance of one another. It is not surprising, therefore, that they are to be included in the programme. We are acutely aware of the historic significent of 34, which was the original headquarters branch of The National Bank Ltd., founded by Daniel O'Connell. However the maintenance of both branches no longer makes any economic sense, especially given the capability of No. 2 College Green to absorb the customers of both branches.

I believe you will enjoy bankiung in the former Parliament builing. It has been carefully preserved by the Bank, both internally and externally, and is one of Dublin's finest period buildings. It houses many important artefacts and the Arts Centre and Banking Museum linked to the building is now visited by some 70,000 people annually. I am pleased to tell you that we will mount a permanent Daniel O'Connell exhibition in the Arts Centre, which will acoomodate the many O'Connell artefacts geld in 34........"

According to the Commercial Property suppliment in the Times, the expected use is a department store.

A good use I think. Its a very attractive property and it would be a sin to turn it into yet another pub like the AIB premises on O'Connell St. I also would hate to see Dame Street decend into another bar only street. Perhaps Virgin would consider buying it and developing it along the lines of their Champs Elysees store in Paris. It will be interesting to see which department stores are touted.

Might be nice if the building was used for the sort of department store concept originally envisaged for the Habitat site.

I heard the Utopia adult shop on Caple Street have their eyes on it ....with plans to develop it into one huge superpornostore..........he he

In "The Sunday Times" at the weekend, a Harrod's spokeperson denied that they were moving in.

I think that its probably too big for a pub (even the rotten new Café en Seine) - so I think the department store is the only real option for the site - although deliveries would be a bugger

The likelihood is that it will operate mainly as an Irish interest store aimed primarily at the tourist market. It is directly opposite the Dublin Tourism office in St Andrew's church."

I see that it was the owners of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre got their hands on it so it should (fingers crossed) be renewed ok

I see the O'Connell Street Branch of AIB has turned into a Bank of Ireland rather than a pub - can anyone explain this one?

BOI are closing their other O'Connell Street branch (the nice small one directly opposite the GPO). I guess they liked the idea of a bigger more noticable premises.

Thankfully, the building they're leaving is too small and ornate to be turned into a stupid theme pub. So hopefully it'll be ok.
