I'd swear we had another thread on this, but I'm damned if I can find it.

Recently we've seen the pedestrianisation of Faulkner's Lane and now it looks as though there is to be partial pedestrianisation of the area around Emmet Place. The kind of raisable bollards used to allow daytime pedestrianisation of the Oliver Plunkett St area have been placed at the junction of Emmet Place and Half Moon St/Academy St. Hopefully, this combined with the extra pedestrian traffic down Faulkner's Lane may see some life brought into the Bridge St/Perry St area.

So what other areas could do with being restricted to traffic?

I've never really seen the necessity to allow traffic onto the half of Pembroke St that has it, nor Phoenix St/Crane Lane.

Would there be any sense in pedestrianising the back lanes around Morrisson's Island? At the moment, they don't really provide access to anything and are primarily used by kerb-crawlers after dark. Given its proximity to the South Mall, could the area develop once that traffic is removed or would it become even more run down with not even prostitutes to be found in the area.

Finally, is there a case for sealing Oliver Plunkett St off to cars between 9pm and 3am. Now, you'd want to be mad to drive down it at 2am anyway, but all the evidence is that there are a number of mad people out there. I mentioned this to a garda acquaintance of mine and she thought it would be a good idea from a public safety point of view too (provided of course that garda cars still had access!).

Hi All,

I'm just trying to get a handle on where might be the best place to seek work as an Architectural Technologist. I'm not limited by location at all, just need to find the places with the most opportunity.

I'm an Irish citizen and have gained most of my experience there, however I have also worked in New Zealand and in the Caribbean, where I am currently located (and currently unemployed). My experience is mainly residential with some commercial and leisure projects. As a result, I'm guessing that places like Dubai, Singapore, China etc. may not have much demand for someone of my experience.

I'm interested in hearing about the state of the industry in Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. especially, but I'd also like to hear about other more "exotic" locations, like Brazil, Angola, Namibia, for instance. (Basically anywhere!!)

Any info or pointers you may want to provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot gang and I look forward to your reponses.

So Fás have announced the following scheme...

"The recently announced Work Placement Programme (WPP) is designed to offer unemployed people, including unemployed graduates, the opportunity to obtain 6 months experience in a work situation.

The government have announced that there will be provision for an initial 2,000 placements under this programme. There two streams of placement with 1,000 placements allocated to each.

* The first stream is for Graduates who, before 2009, have attained a full award at level 7 or above on the National Framework of Qualifications (e.g. Ordinary Bachelors Degree), who have been unemployed for 6 months and are also currently in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance.

* The second stream is open to all other individuals who have been unemployed for 6 months and are also currently in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance. Under this stream, 250 places are being ring fenced for those under 25 years of age.

Participants on both streams of the Work Placement Programme will continue to receive their existing social welfare entitlements from the Department of Social and Family Affairs during their 6 month work placement.

Applications to provide a work placement are open to all Public and Private bodies that have:

* A minimum of 10 employees
* Not made any person redundant in the last 6 months

Additionally:

* A business cannot have an existing vacancy in the area where the work placement is being offered
* Any Work Placement offered must be for a full working week "

Now is it just me or do the rules of this scheme essentially rule out any architects from applying. Firstly why say that the host company has to have 10 employees? A lot of firms who could really do with this extra help fall well short of ten employees. And secondly I doubt there's a single architecture practice with 10 or more employees that hasn't been forced to make persons redundant in the last 6 months.

My guess would be that even if you were lucky enough to have 10 person office (without recent redundancies) they'd probably still discount the directors as not being employees and thus make you inelligible.

No doubt the likes of Coughlan are delighted that an industry on its knees cannot benefit from such a dig out, but perhaps it would be worth lobbying other politicians to have the rules revised, they could do worse than pleasing the 2000 plus registered architects who most certainly are feeling Mary's "chill wind."

I was just wondering if anyone had seen this recently rediscovered gem. The images of Dublin and Howth in the late 1950s are heart wrenchingly nostalgic and I can't help thinking what a hit with the tourists the Howth tram might have been had it survived another few years. San Francisco's cable car system comes to mind.

Hello everyone,

I have a new customer which manufactures filtration systems, architectural and decoration surfaces with the help of famous architects. They would like to find the best way to reach architects in the UK. I have difficulty in finding relevant information. Do you mind helping me? I have a few questions to ask.

The products my customers are selling are quite expensive. This is why most of their contacts in Europe are architects and not directly contractors. Even if their clients are contractors, their products are mostly used because they have been prescribed by architects.

As a manufacturer, what is the best way to promote your construction products among architects in the UK?
In mainland Europe, our client is used to working with companies which visit the architects and present the products on their behalf. These companies report to my client if some architects are interested in their product or if they are working on interesting projects. Once they get this information, they can contact the companies and work out how my client’s products could be part of new architectural projects. Do you know such companies in the UK?

Are architects using the RIBA Product selector? As a manufacturer, is it possible to take part in the CPD seminars to get in touch with architects?

Thank you for your help.

Frederic
