View Full Version : Archiseek, the next version
Paul Clerkin 18th October 2004, 06:25 PM Planning a rebuild of the site, probably around the end of the year. This will include an update of the forum software (and possibly a new faster server). Probably will also include a new look and feel as this particular design path has reached the end of the road....
Any requests for features or areas?
space_invader 19th October 2004, 10:13 AM paul, gotta say, you do a great job here; this is an easy-to-use site and one of the best architectural portals i know of.
requests?
what about building up a library of contributor's articles or summat like that?
Paul Clerkin 20th October 2004, 02:02 PM A nice idea but here is something I have found.... no everyone who thinks they can write, can actually write or keep producing columns...
on p45 we used to have lots of witty people who could write long amusing posts, but once they had a blog or a column, could only grind one out at best every few weeks to a month....
Paul Clerkin 25th October 2004, 05:27 PM Over the next few weeks, you may notice the odd broken link as I replace the existing look and feel across the site.
I'm intending branding the entire site as archiseek.com including what is currently branded as archeire.com for consistancy
The new layout is simply a further development of the designs used since 1996, but a bit cleaner and with the current navigation simplified.
There will also be a few new areas including, wait for it... Uruguay....

Montevideo,
Any chance of giving free Madness downloads,
Fair play there is nothing like expanding the parameters, I just love 1920's commercial architecture and Montevideo is up there with the best of them. Any thoughts of putting Buenos Aires in there as well?

A nice idea but here is something I have found.... no everyone who thinks they can write, can actually write or keep producing columns... You wouldn't have to publish every article you receive. If there was even one good article published every few weeks (not by the same person), it could be worthwhile.
Would it be possible to index the photos in more than one way? At the moment they are arranged by location (country, city, street). It would be useful to also index them by style, period or architect.
Paul Clerkin 26th October 2004, 01:14 AM I like the geographical nature of it - it makes the site scaleable whereas categorisation by style would be seriously cumbersome. You can use the search to find buildings by a specific architect. When the initial results come up, you can narrow down the search to a particular root, ie you can search only in "news" archives or in the "building of ------" area
Paul Clerkin 5th November 2004, 04:16 AM I've upgraded the forum software tonight... it will require some tweaking to get the settings and the visual appearance of it to what i would like...
so your mileage may vary this morning... you will notice a lot of new features..... :D

vinnyfitz 5th November 2004, 10:59 AM Good stuff.
Congrats.
Paul Clerkin 5th November 2004, 05:11 PM You may notice the odd glitch but hopefully not too many....
GrahamH 5th November 2004, 09:06 PM Looks really good, and the more blue the better - the colour of authority apparently :)
Paul Clerkin 5th November 2004, 09:18 PM A few new features....

Irishtown 5th November 2004, 09:30 PM It looks very nice!
Paul Clerkin 6th November 2004, 06:15 AM any other forums needed?
PVC King 6th November 2004, 06:34 PM Well done Paul
I didn't think the forum could have been improved as most of the quality has always been the variety of opinions given an airing on this forum, but the new look is faster, brighter and has much more information.
Thanks and I hope you get a good return from your new investment
TP
PVC King 6th November 2004, 08:48 PM I like it!!!!!
I hope the advertisers like as much,
evrything that you had to navigate around the site around for is now on every page. The only glitch is that I can't find the polls section.
ro_G 6th November 2004, 08:57 PM top nav bar doesn't work in firefox. the rollover is only working in the store and competitions parts
Paul Clerkin 7th November 2004, 12:45 AM the polls have been reincorporated back into relevant forums....
as per your suggestion that we can comment on the polls, polls can be run inside the forums for future voting and comment - i'll endevour to highlight the more interesting ones on the homepage...
re javascript drop boxes, i'll have to cure that for firefox.... but more interesting in getting the whole site updated first....

I noticed that after I had posted and it will make for a much more interactive experience going forward, I also really like the new ms word format for posts although if I bothered to get a new mouse it would probably be more use to me, using the tab bar really improves typing speed.
Paul Clerkin 7th November 2004, 12:54 AM now everyone's aim for the next few weeks should be to introduce one new person each to the forum
lexington 16th November 2004, 06:19 PM Any chance that when you click on the desired Thread - you would be immediately redirected to the last port on that thread as opposed to be redirected to the First Page every time? I know on the side bar of the Content page there is a list of most recently posted threads - but on the main Content selection - could the above suggestion be implemented please???
Thanks! Like the work so far.
Paul Clerkin 18th November 2004, 05:58 PM Currently reindexing site search tool - you may notice some lack of results while this is happening....
Paul Clerkin 23rd November 2004, 06:36 AM A few more items to go in, to balance the sides but you'll get the idea of what the new frontpage will look like here
http://www.archiseek.com/vbindex.php
ro_G 25th November 2004, 09:46 PM looking very snazzy
Paul Clerkin 2nd December 2004, 06:50 AM just realised that another anniversary of archeire has just passed... over eight years now.... time flies when you're having fun
it was a little over eight years ago, that the small version of this site got mentioned in yahoo dispatches and the server went crazy.....

Architectural Dublin
Perhaps what you really need to win at bingo is the luck of the Irish. Well, okay, if not their luck, then at least their architecture. Not just any old architecture, either - we're talking the real McCoy here: Architectural Dublin, a fascinating tour of exactly what the title suggests. A work in progress, the site currently offers a look at "the myriad glories" of Dublin's architectural development from medieval times through the 17th and 18th Centuries. Soon to be included: the 19th and 20th Centuries. In the meantime, read about and view images of Trinity College, Christchurch Cathedral and Dublin Castle, amongst others. In short, visit this beautifully done site to see everything that makes Dublin so...so... so... well, so Dublin-like.
PVC King 13th December 2004, 08:16 PM That was a great review of www.p45.net you got in the indo today,
I see they have forgiven you for the taking of christ gag of a few years back :p
Paul Clerkin 13th December 2004, 08:59 PM Yeah... excellent little piece
They have decided that it didnt happen - they removed all mentions of the story from their internet archive including inserting a blank area in the pdf of the frontpage of the day they splashed it all over the paper
William Steward 13th February 2005, 06:51 PM Paul...great work on this site. I came to it since I was contemplating advertising for staff and hence found "archiseek" - not exactly what I was looking for but it captued my attention nonetheless. You might consider adding a job notice board of some kind in a future version (maybe there is and I missed it). Although I came to the site by mistake I will be a regular visitor.
Devin 26th August 2005, 07:10 PM I miss the way the post subject used to appear, in smaller font, in the main post area, rather than in a separate margin at the top of the post (where the thread title automatically appears unless changed). This feature was used to good effect by chewy (where is he these days?). It was handy if you wanted to change the direction of the thread slightly or pick up on what someone else said without necessarily quoting them. Now, the post subject (if you put one in) can be too easily missed.
And you can’t even put it back in manually since the different font sizes were taken off a few weeks ago…..moan, moan…
PVC King 18th April 2006, 08:19 PM Any chance of a poll on the Soho topic?
